Toms Travel Air (E-Mail copy)
The Travel Air Manufacturing Company of Wichita, Kansas was founded in 1924 by Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna and Lloyd Stearman. Their first airplane was a refinement of an earlier Stearman design, the "New Swallow" built by Swallow Aircraft. The design was patterned after the famous WWI Fokker D-VII, favorite design of Lloyd Stearman's. For all the details on the company and all the aircraft see
"Travel Air: Wings over the Prairie" by Edward Phillips ISBN 0911139176
By July, 1929, Travel Air was turning out an unprecedented 50 aircraft a month and had manufactured half of the new aircraft in the United States since 1924 a total of a quarter of all airplanes flying in the United States. They built 35 different models of their biplanes and monoplanes.
Travel Airs were highly sought after by race and endurance pilots. in fact, Walter Beech turned down Charles Lindbergh's request to build a plane for his New York to Paris flight because the factory was too busy with existing orders.....
